San Miguel de Allende is as magical as a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel
and as vibrant as a Frida Kahlo painting. Nestled in the Sierra Madre
Mountains 180 miles northwest of Mexico City and declared a national historic
monument by the Mexican government, the town draws artists, writers, and
musicians to its atmosphere of gracious living
In March the weather in San Miguel is clear and sunny with temperature
averaging 75 degrees during the day with evenings in the upper 50's. Chance
of rainfall: one-tenth of one percent.
One the world’s 10 best travel destinations according to Travel
& Leisure Magazine and in the top 15 cities to visit according
to Traveler Magazine, San Miguel is a visitor’s delight. Plus,
our trip has been endorsed by the Consul General of Mexico.
The group of women who go to San Miguel de Allende may or may not know
a word of Spanish, but they share a love of learning and adventure. They
frequently become close friends as they support each other through self-discovery
and together enjoy travel, food, architecture, history, salsa dancing, open-air
markets, and myriad other once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
San Miguel de Allende is definitely an escape from the ordinary. Founded
in 1541, the town grew rapidly when thick veins of ore in the nearby hills
were discovered during the colonial period. With the wealth of ore came
the palatial mansions and ornate churches which still decorate the town’s
cobblestone streets.
Since then, San Miguel has both retained its traditional flavor and welcomed
the best of the modern world. Here, hidden behind colonial walls, are
nearly 100 upscale art galleries and the venerated Institute Allende,
the largest and most vibrant English-speaking arts and crafts school in
all of Latin America.
Yet Indian men from the nearby pueblitos still bring their bussos into
town every morning to sell firewood door-to-door, and along the banks
of Rio Laja, mothers and daughters slap laundry against well-worn river
rocks.
Just wait until you taste the regional Mexican dishes served in open-air
courtyards, relax with a fresh lime margarita, and wander through the
small artisan shops of San Miguel de Allende’s narrow, colonial streets.
